A Day in Our Life

H‍ello Friend,

We set out to make a video that shows a typical day of writing in the van…it didn’t go as planned, but it went exactly as expected.

We usually get to spend 3-5 days writing off-grid depending on how long our supplies last (food, water, fuel, etc.). This is usually followed by a chore day, but we’ll save that for another post.

When all goes well, our routine looks something like this… ‍

Most of our daily activities are fairly mundane. We do chores. We work. We eat food. We watch TV. Most of the differences between our life on the road and the one we were used to come from the things that we don’t anticipate.

On the day we set out to make the video, the weather was a bit chilly, so Courtney wrote from inside the van. As the day progressed, the weather got worse. The sky went gray, it started to rain, and the wind picked up. It got so bad that we were nervous about our campsite turning to mud. We didn’t want to risk getting stuck again, so we ended up packing up and hitting the road.

After we moved into our van full-time, we learned very quickly to trust our instincts and to be willing to adapt to every situation. It’s helpful to set intentions for what we want to accomplish each day, but it’s best not to be rigid in our expectations. We never really know how a day will turn out. Sometimes our days are beautiful, peaceful, and productive. Sometimes a campsite doesn’t work out due to the weather, temperature, wildlife, or just bad vibes and we don’t get anything done because we have to pack up and find a new spot.

At first, we would get frustrated when things didn’t work out the way we anticipated. We couldn’t help but feel down on ourselves for not making as much progress as we’d hoped. But since then, we have come to appreciate going with the flow – every experience is inspiration for our story and some of the best ones are the ones we couldn’t have arranged if we wanted to.

So, while the day didn’t go according to the plan we had set out to film, it wasn’t at all surprising to us that we had to pivot. We couldn’t have designed a more fitting example of what it’s really like making magic stories on the road.

With love,

Court and Tim
